The Defendant

One does not have to be sat in a courtroom or accused of a crime in order to be judged by others. We live in a society where people are mostly judged for what they are and what they do (good or bad). Many are judged before they are even able to prove their worth and/or intentions.
I'm sure you have judged others in the past and will do the same in the future. It is for this reason I decided to write a poem regarding what we should base our judgements of others on, instead.
The following is a poem written by me entitled 'The Defendant', enjoy.
Do not judge a man because he is a professional or an amateur,
Judge a man based on his ambitions and the content of his character.
Do not judge a man by the colour of his skin,
Instead, judge him by the contents within.
Do not judge a man by the means in which he puts food on his plate,
Judge a man by the company he keeps and those he calls ‘mates’.
Regardless of if he is on a six-figure salary or on minimum wage...
Judge a man by his loves, his hates, what makes him laugh and what makes him rage.
Do not judge a man by the food that he eats or what he can cook...
Or his style, his clothes, his smile or his looks
Judge a man by what he feeds his mind, through his collection of books.
Do not judge a man by what he has or what he is,
Judge a man by how he is and what he gives.
Do not judge a man by the car he drives or the house he lives in,
Judge a man by what drives him to keep on living.
Judge a man by his efforts and not the job that he does,
Base your judgements on what he is, and not what he once was.
Do not judge a man by what he says he knows, judge a man by what he says and shows.
What a wise man once said, I shall say to you...
''Judge a man not by what he does, but by what he does that he does not have to do.''
Judge a man by all this, and only then will you know...
Whether he is the highest of the high, or the lowest of the low. -Emmanuel Nnaji
