Dear European Union

As we all know, BREXIT (the departure of the UK from the European Union) is fast approaching. What you are about to read is a poetic letter I have written from the viewpoint of the UK... that is, if the UK were a person.

Please be advised that the following is simply a fictional letter of me portraying the United Kingdom in a goodbye letter to the European Union. The words and views shared do not depict my political views.

Dear European Union,

This is the UK speaking. I'm so sorry but...

It's not you, its me.

My people held a referendum, and voted to leave.

We have been together for over 40 years, since 1973.

We have grown together and stood tall together like a giant ebony tree.

I have learnt a lot from you and you have added much value to me, like a masters or a second degree.

I do not wish to go on and on, so I will try and keep this brief.

I must say... ending it with you has been quite a relief.

There has been a lot of controversy and laughable speculations.

But what will we tell EU students or those studying abroad, regarding their education?

How do we tell them we are departing? We owe them an explanation.

It feels like we are a married couple, going through a messy divorce or a rough separation.

My time with you is nearly up, we are nearing our expiration.

When the people of the UK heard we were breaking up, I could feel the tension and devastation.

We have been going back and forth trying to amend the current regulations and legislations.

United Kingdom (UK), European Union (EU), Britain Exit (Brexit). What are all these pointless abbreviations?

I feel we need to do more than just have 'talks' and endless conversations.

My people voted LEAVE. They instructed me to get out of the EU...

Evacuation.

Many people want me to permanently CUT you off..

Amputation.

Indeed I am SICK AND TIRED of your empty promises...

Exasperation.

I just... I just need some space to breath...

Ventilation.

We must ACT...

Demonstration.

Some have said that my departure just doesn't add up...

Miscalculation.

For Brexit means different things to different people... so many different interpretations.

Indeed I am going to leave, there is no time for contemplation.

*exhales* *sighs* I told myself I would keep this brief... now this letter is resembling a dissertation.

Even though we are breaking up, I hope we can still keep in contact.

''Brexit means Brexit''. Business is business and for now, I must terminate our contract.

I hope we can sing one final song, and have one final dance.

I would like to say 'adios' to Italy and 'au revoir' to France.

Things go and things come, it is imperative I go...

and focus on my income.

One day I may knock on your door or ring your doorbell...

*KNOCK* *KNOCK* *KNOCK* *DING* DONG*

In life... you either lose some or win some.

For now I must go, I need to get things done.

I wish you all the best!

Many thanks,

United Kingdom

Thank you for reading!

Stay safe. Stay blessed. Work hard. Don't stress.
